India welcomes dates for Nepal polls

 -  Calcutta News

June 26 2007 - India Monday welcomed Nepal's decision to hold landmark elections Nov 22 to a constituent assembly that will decide the fate of that country's monarchy and offered its support to push 'democracy, peace and development' in the neighbouring country.

'The announcement of the date for elections to the Constituent Assembly is an important step forward in the institutionalisation of democracy, peace and development in Nepal,' external affairs ministry spokesperson Navtej Sarna said in a statement.

'We wish the government of Nepal all success in the holding of these elections in a manner that the people of Nepal can freely and fairly determine the future of their country,' the spokesperson said.

'As a close friend and neighbour of Nepal, India stands ready to render whatever support is required to achieve these key objectives,' the ministry stressed.

'The cabinet is confident that the election can be held on Nov 22,' Information and Communications Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who is also the government spokesman, had announced Sunday after a nearly two-hour-long cabinet meeting.

The elections were earlier scheduled for June 20, but were put off due to political reasons.
