SPA 5th joint assembly in Janakpur today; Madhesi parties plan to foil rally

JANAKPUR, Jan 26 2008 - Security has been beefed up in Janakpur for the fifth joint electoral assembly of the Seven-party (SPA) alliance due to start Saturday afternoon.

Hundreds of general public from Janakpur and neighbouring districts have already gathered around the assembly venue- Rangabhumi of Barha-bigha.

However, many villagers are still afraid to participate in the rally led by People’s Front Nepal despite the assurance of the security bodies, it has been learnt.

More than two thousand personnel of General Police and Armed Police Force have been mobilised for enforcing security in and around the assembly venue.

On the eve of the SPA rally here, various Madhesi parties had held a meeting and concluded that they will work jointly to foil the joint assembly.

Cadres of Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM) have put up messages in every street from Jaleshwor to Janakpur calling on the people not to participate in the rally. JTMM also detonated bombs in some places, it has been reported.

The administration has tightened the security situation in and around the city as at least two explosions occurred at different places here on Friday evening ahead of the seven party joint meet.

According to police, the security perimeter for the rally venue has been extended till six kilometers.

Amik Sherchan, CP Gajurel, Peace Minister Ram Chandra Poudel and other second-tier SPA leaders are scheduled to address the assembly.

Seven parties have called the Madhesi parties and groups not to disrupt today’s SPA rally.

Also today Madhesi People’s Rights Forum, issuing a press release, directed its cadres not to carry out any activities that could disrupt the SPA meet.

SPA has been organizing joint assembly in seven major cities of the country to create conducive atmosphere for the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections slated for April 10.

The assembly has already been carried out in Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Bhairahawa and Dhangadi. It will also be conducted in Nepalgunj and Birgunj in the near future.
